京都大学は、ここ数年、韓国地中海研究所（IMS）と毎年、合同でセミナーを行うなど研究交流を深めている。本セミナーはその一環として企画されたものであり、日本側の主催者が京都大学イスラーム地域研究センター（KIAS）となって初めて開催されたものである。韓国側からは、 IMS所長を務めるCHOI Choon Sik教授をはじめとする総勢6名が出席した。昨年度までの合同セミナーは、原則、韓国側の研究者による発表のみで構成されていたが、今年度は、日本側の若手研究者による報告も提供された。
第1セッションでは、社会経済に関するトピックが取り上げられ、地中海地域において近年注目を集め始めているイスラーム金融についての報告、地中海諸国とのつながりが深いヨルダンの貿易と国内産業の動態に関する報告、世界中からムスリムが訪れるシリアのシーア派聖廟参詣についての報告が行われた。第2セッションでは、メディアとコミュニケーションに関するトピックが取り上げられ、中東・北アフリカ地域で広範なネットワークを張り巡らせているアラブ系衛星テレビ局についての報告、スペインの作家、ロレンソ・シルバによるサイバー空間を利用した新たな文学のあり方を追究する報告が行われた。第3セッションでは、文化とアイデンティティに関するトピックが取り上げられ、シンドバッドの冒険物語の現代的表象に関する報告、地中海地域における文化的アイデンティティ問題に関する報告、イタリアにおけるユダヤ人に対する眼差しと自己表象に関する報告が行われた。
報告されたトピックは広範にわたり、いずれの参加者もずべてのトピックに知悉しているわけではなかったため、基本的な質問や意表をつくコメントなどが活発に出され、議論が白熱した。このような多様なバックグラウンドを持つ研究者によって構成されるセミナーの開催によって、地中海というキーワードで括ることのできる研究トピックの豊穣さが改めて認識された。IMSとの合同セミナーの開催は、今後も毎年開催することが、東長KIAS副センター長とCHOI・IMS所長の間で確認されたことにより、これまでの交流をさらに発展させていくことが期待できるだろう。
